60TH ANNIVERSARY BUTTERFLY BALL - Saturday 28th June 2008
Guests attending the spectacular Butterfly Ball at the Macdonald Craxton Wood Hotel at Ledsham near Chester helped to make the 60th birthday celebrations of a leading North West charity a truly glittering occasion.
More than 170 of the regions leading lights from the worlds of medicine, the law and business attended the event the culmination of a week of activities marking the Diamond Jubilee of the North West Cancer Research Fund.
The NWCRF has given more than 28 million to support groundbreaking research since its formation, helping to fund the work of leading experts from around the globe in their attempts to establish the primary causes of the disease, and provide better treatments for it.
In the UK, around one person in every three will have direct experience of cancer at some time in their lives.
The Butterfly Ball, generously sponsored by the Employment Law Advisory Service (ELAS), took its name from the charitys butterfly emblem symbolising the emergance of hope. Research funded by the charity is carried out at Liverpool, Lancaster and Bangor Universities, with awards made to scientists twice a year.
The event featured both a prize draw and a charity auction. Paintings, including two specially commisioned works by leading British artists, including Carolyn Higgins, Pam Usher, Ken Lewis, Keith Fearon and Greg McDonough, attracted strong bids from generous guests keen to lend their support, as did a signed print by the reknowned Liverpool-based photographer Stephanie de Leng. All the art-works were supplied by the Dot-Art gallery in Liverpool city centre.
Also up for grabs was a private box for ten people to see a top National Hunt race meeting at Ascot, with food and drink provided too, all provided courtesy of former England Rugby international Victor Ubogu and his hospitality company, VU Ltd.
Top prize in the draw was a stunning diamond pendant, valued at 1,400, provided by Boodles the jewelers.
Guests danced the night away to the swinging big-band sound of Dr Jazz and the Cheshire Cats, who played a storming set.
Anne Jackson, Chief Executive of the NWCRF said: What a wonderful evening in a splendid setting. It was an unforgettable occasion- and best of all, we raised more than 11,000 for the Fund. We have to thank each and every one of our supporters for their generosity theyre all helping to provide greater hope for those touched by this disease.
