A CHARITABLE WAY TO GET FIT
13 July 2006

The Warrington branch of the North West Cancer Research Fund is set to organise summer walks around Sankey Valley Park throughout the summer to make the most of the weather while raising money for the charity. The committee is taking the opportunity to make its next meeting at Sankey Valley Park a public affair in an effort to get more local people involved in the charity and to publicise their regular evening walks through the park.

The Warrington Committee was initially set up with the help of the Warrington Guardian who publicised their plight for new members back in 2004. Jacqueline Spence, the secretary of the Warrington committee decided to volunteer when she saw a letter in the Guardian outlining the work of North West Cancer Research Fund. Jacqueline, who was recovering from ovarian cancer at the time says: I had been keeping myself occupied by making hand made cards and decided that by becoming involved with the work of the charity I could use my skill to raise money, whilst at the same time feeling I could give something back for the wonderful treatment I received at Liverpool Womens and Clatterbridge hospitals.

Jacqueline is quick to say that from a personal point of view, meeting the other members of the Committee has enabled her to cope with the after effects of living with cancer while at the same time helping others through the work of North West Cancer Research Fund.

The committee may be small in number but with all the events they have in the pipeline, they make up for it with enthusiasm and are keen to increase their numbers. Jacqueline says Some of our local shops are supporting us by selling my hand made cards on our behalf. We also have a sponsored swim, a battle of the bands, a quiz evening, a cake/tombola event and a garden party already planned.Since we started the committee we have had regular meetings and our members our expanding.

She continues - Our members range from 13-60, were the most diverse committee the charity has so anyone can join. Our walks through the park will be a great way to keep fit and to help your local charity at the same time. It certainly makes exercising a bit more painless!
