BOLTON DOCTOR RUNS FOR NORTH WEST CANCER RESEARCH FUND

�A doctor from Turton, Bolton took part in the world's biggest half marathon to raise money for a North West charity.
Dr Tim Bullen, who has a special interest in colon cancer, joined 47,000 other runners on 18 September in the Great North Run. He successfully completed the course and raised hundreds of pounds for North West Cancer Research Fund. �The Fund has voluntary committees across the North West including Lancashire. �A member of Tim's family is currently being treated for colon cancer.
Tim, 30, had trained hard for several months, fitting his weekly mileage in alongside his clinical work and medical studies as he is reading for a research degree. An unexpected benefit of his sporting activities was a dramatic weight loss as, by the time he finished the race, he was two stones lighter than when he had been when he embarked on his training in May.
North West Cancer Research Fund makes �750,000 available every year for fundamental research into the causes of cancer. �Virtually all of this money is raised through voluntary efforts and donations. �Throughout its 57 year history, an average of nearly 90p in every � raised has consistently been spent directly on research.
Tim said, 'Cancer patients are an important part of my professional life and I know that, because of research in years gone by, more lives are now being saved. �In raising money for North West Cancer Research Fund, I am trying to play my part in allowing more research to take place so that, in the future, even more people will be treated successfully for cancer. �This is especially close to my heart at the moment as a member of my own family is battling colon cancer.'
