LOCAL CANCER RESEARCH TO BENEFIT FROM FUND RAISERS' EFFORTS

LOCAL CANCER RESEARCH TO BENEFIT FROM FUND RAISERS' EFFORTS
11 November 2005

Volunteer fund raisers from the Lunesdale Valley have raised thousands of pounds for local cancer research.

North West Cancer Research Fund has 16 rural committees in the Lunesdale Valley. A cheque for 17,700 was presented at the annual meeting of the Northern Committees in Tunstall on 23 October 2005. The money will be spent on pioneering research in Lancaster university in the coming year.

Mrs Olivia Ley, Chairman of the Lunesdale committee, said, 'Our work for the Fund is rewarding and satisfying. More people are now surviving cancer than ever before and one of the reasons for this is the investment which has taken place into research in years gone by.'

Mr John Lewys-Lloyd, Chairman of North West Cancer Research Fund said, 'Once again, the members of our Lunesdale committees and their many supporters have done a first class job. No research would be possible were it not for their fund raising efforts.'

North West Cancer Research Fund has been funding research in Lancaster university for over 10 years. Last year, it made the largest single award ever to the university when it gave 265,000 to create the North West Cancer Research Fund Fellowship. This allowed the recruitment of Dr Sarah Allinson as a full time dedicated cancer researcher. She will be in post for 5 years.

North West Cancer Research Fund is an independent regional cancer research charity which makes 750,000 available every year for fundamental research into the causes of cancer. Virtually all of this money is raised through voluntary efforts and donations. Throughout its 57 year history, an average of nearly 90p in every raised has consistently been spent directly on research.
