Ellesmere Port Man Cycles in Memory of Father

Tommy Morton from Great Sutton has completed a 250 mile bike ride which raised �2200 for cancer research charities most of which is for a local cancer research charity.
Tommy, 59, cycled from his home in Great Sutton to Poole in Dorset in memory of his father, Jack, who died from cancer in May 2004.� The money he raised is being donated to North West Cancer Research Fund, an independent regional charity.
North West Cancer Research Fund makes available between �750,000 and �1 million every year for fundamental research into the causes of cancer.� Amazingly, virtually all of this money is raised through voluntary efforts and donations.� Throughout its 57 year history, an average of almost 90p in every � raised has consistently been spent directly on research.� All of the research takes place in North West England and North Wales.
For years, Tommy used to take Jack on holiday to Poole and would tell Jack how much he would like to cycle there.� Jack, though, would always pull his leg about it.� But when Jack had passed away, Tommy thought that there was no better way to remember him and to raise money for a good cause than by doing what his dad had always teased him about.
Tommy said, 'I want to thank the many people who were so generous in supporting me.� I should especially like to mention the parishioners of St Saviour's in Ellesmere Port and the members of the Ellesmere Port Labour Social Club and also Mary Morton and Val Porter and their respective work colleagues.'
North West Cancer Research Fund has 40 committees across the region, all are run by volunteers many of whom have been touched by cancer themselves. Sheila Gill, chairman of the Neston Committee, said, 'Tommy's is a lovely story and we're so grateful that he has given to money to us.� It will be spent on pioneering research at The University of Liverpool.'
Three hundred pounds has been donated to Cancer Research UK.
