Lunesdale Valley Fundraisers Raise ï¿½23,000 for Cancer Research

Aï¿½dedicated group of volunteers have raised ï¿½23,000 for research into the causes of cancer. The volunteers, who come from across the Lunesdale Valley, have just presented a cheque to the North West Cancer Research Fund a regional, independent charity.

The amount is particularly impressive because it is raised entirely by volunteers who often come from quite small communities. One of the volunteers Mrs Daphne Peel from Kirkby Lonsdale said, ï¿½Few people go through life untouched by cancer which is why all our volunteers feel so strongly about raising money into researching its causes. We feel particularly strongly about the North West Cancer Research Fund as all the money raised is spent on research within the North West area and because 90p in every pound raised is spent directly on research. We would like to thank everyone who has donated money or helped us with our fundraising, we could not have raised this amount without their support.ï¿½

The fundraisers have an excellent relationship with the charity and the researchers funded by it. They were recently invited by Professor Trevor MacMillan Dean of Environmental Sciences at Lancaster University to visit the research laboratories there as a thank you for their hard work in raising the money for the facility.

This year the volunteers carried out a variety of fund raising activities include coffee mornings at Silverdale, Sedbergh, Tatham, Wennington and Caton and a stall with old fashioned games at the Victorian fair held in Kirkby Lonsdaleï¿½by the Casterton Committee. They also held a Cheese and Wine evening at Mansergh, Annual Christmasï¿½Fairs in November at Kirkby Lonsdale and Warton and a joint Lunesdale event - a Cheese and Wine Evening with a pianist at Burrow Hall by the kind invitation of Hazel and John Halliday.

The North West Cancer Research Fund has a large presence in the region and recently granted one of its largest ever awards to Lancaster University.ï¿½ The ï¿½265,000 donation was given to the University to fund the appointment of a dedicated cancer researcher for five years. At the time the Chairman of the North West Cancer Research Fund, John Lewys-Lloyd said ï¿½I am especially pleased for our many volunteer fundraisers in Lancashire and Cumbria without whose efforts the money to finance this position would not existsï¿½.
