Hardworking Volunteers Raise Vital Money for Cancer Research

Hardworking Volunteers Raise Vital Money for Cancer Research
25 November 2004

Fundraisers from the Morecambe and Heysham area this week gave a cheque for over 5000 to the North West Cancer Research Fund an independent regional charity which supports research into the causes of cancer.

The amount is particularly impressive because the committee which raised the money is made up of a small group of volunteers and every penny is the result of their hard work. Mrs Margaret Tomlinson secretary of the Morecombe and Heysham committee said There are very few people whose lives have not been affected by cancer and this is why our members feel it is so important to raise money for research into its causes. Were only a small committee and the fact we have managed to raise so much is down to the support of local people and we would like to thank them for their generosity.

The North West Cancer Research Fund has a strong presence in the region and recently gave one of its largest ever awards to Lancaster University. The 265,000 donation will pay for a specialist cancer researcher at the University for five years. At the time of the award the charitys Chairman John Lewys-Lloyd acknowledged the fundraisers of Lancashire and Cumbria saying that if it was not for their efforts the money for the position would not exist.

The North West Cancer Research Fund relies entirely on volunteers like those in Morecombe and Heysham as it has no full time staff and virtually all its money is raised by volunteers. The charity is based in the North West and throughout its fifty-six year history has consistently spent over 90p in every pound raised directly on research into the causes of cancer.
